Non-reformist reform is a reform that threatens the structures of society by challenging existing power relations and prioritizing demands regardless of if they are possible within the frameworks of the current system. Unlike reformist reforms, where the goal of the reform is to tweak the status quo, non-reformist reforms aim to transform or replace it entirely. Our project highlights cases where collective action has pushed beyond surface-level fixes toward more fundamental shifts and systemic changes. This blog will be categorized into three sections, highlighting key reforms in medical tech, urban development, and gender and race related innovations, with 2 case studies in each section.
The goal is to narrate stories of people who were subjected to injustices by technological systems, and how they took power back from these systems. Throughout this course, we have studied multiple instances of communities suffering because of institutional neglect and power structures, and these stories should serve as an example for people trying to fight back against these structures. These injustices do not arise due to ignorance, but are ingrained and often incentivized in the current system. When breakdowns keep repeating, you can only swap out so many parts before you confront the design itself. At some point, justice demands not another fix, but a new machine entirely.
